HDC Launches First Ever Amberley Garage Sale Trail

The Hurunui District Council is excited to announce the launch of the inaugural Amberley Garage Sale Trail, a town-wide event scheduled for Saturday 29 November 2025. This new community initiative aims to promote sustainability and provide a fun way for our community to find new homes for pre-loved items.

Reusing and repurposing unwanted clothing and household items is a simple action we can all take to keep valuable materials in circulation. By giving these items a new lease of life, we prevent them from going to the landfill. Reduce, reuse, and repurpose are at the top of the waste hierarchy, and it is these options we should be considering before discarding items that could have a second home and be of benefit to others.

The idea for the event came about as a way to promote the reuse of household goods. By coordinating a single, town-wide garage sale day, the Council hopes to make it easier for people to both declutter their homes and find new treasures.

By keeping items in use for as long as we can by buying or selling it at a garage sale, is not only a positive step for the planet but also benefits our wallets.

“This is a great initiative that showcases our community's commitment to sustainability," says Hurunui District Mayor Marie Black. “The Garage Sale Trail is a brilliant example of how we can all work together to create a more circular economy right here in our own backyard. It’s an opportunity for our residents to connect, declutter, and contribute to a healthier environment in a practical and enjoyable way.”

Sustainable living is about making lifestyle choices and decisions to reduce our use of our natural resources. One of the major themes in Council’s Sustainability Strategy is contributing to a circular economy. We want our community to move away from the ‘take-make-dispose’ approach of the past and start reducing waste wherever we can.

This is a wonderful way for our community to come together," says Nicole Hurinui, Hurunui District Council Waste and Compliance Support Officer. "It's about making it easy for our residents to participate in the circular economy, diverting items from the landfill and giving them a second life.”

Supported by a digital map of all participating garage sale locations, shoppers will be able to easily navigate the trail and discover hidden gems across Amberley.
