A positive path into pharmaceuticals

Brodie Marris has nearly finished his first year at Otago University studying health science, and will branch off into pharmaceuticals in 2026.
The former Amuri Area School student from Hanmer Springs was a recipient of the Secondary School Achievers Fund at the end of 2024, and has used the fund to assist him with accommodation costs at the halls of residence in Dunedin.
He is looking forward to returning home to Hanmer Springs for the summer where he will find work in the village, but equally has enjoyed his first year away from home enjoying his studies, time with friends and playing badminton, volleyball and some netball. He recently took a moment to thank Hurunui District Council for their support.
“Dear Hurunui District Council,
I am writing to thank you all for awarding me the 2024 education award to assist me in my studies at Otago University. So far, this year has been an incredible experience, settling into university and halls of residence was something completely new for me and I have learned so much from it already.
Arana, the college I reside at, has opened so many opportunities outside of education such as playing hall sports and competing in intercollege activities. It has also helped me tremendously with learning via the tutorials they provide throughout each week. Through the hall experience I was able to make some genuine friendships that I will be taking with me into my flatting life over the next few years.
I am pleased with the grades I obtained in the first semester, and although this semester is not yet finished, I am happy with the grades received so far. We’ve only had one test this semester, cardiovascular and skin physiology, but I managed to get 100% on it which makes me confident for the rest of the semester.
Without the financial help you all provided me with, I wouldn’t have settled into my new life as smoothly, as money would’ve been more of a stress, so for your help I am extremely grateful for. Thank you so much again, I truly appreciate your time, consideration and the award.

This Fund is open to all current Year 11-13 students who are going on to further study in 2026. Past recipients have used the funds for boarding fees, scholarship travel expenses, purchases of text books or electronic equipment.
Applications for this year’s Secondary School Achievers Fund closes next Monday, October 6.
Mayor Marie Black said the Fund was established in 2000, and to date more than 150 Hurunui young people have received grants.
“This is fantastic for the young people of Hurunui. Stepping into the big world can seem daunting for some, and this extra assistance helps to make the step that much more manageable.”
