End of an era for three Hurunui councillors

The meeting agenda was folded away for the final time for three of Hurunui’s district councillors this week, marking not only the end of the triennium, but the end of an era for them.

Councilors Karen Armstrong, Vanessa McPherson and Ross Barnes have collectively served 13 and a half years around the Council table, representing the District’s West and South wards, and have stepped down from their Councillor positions for Hurunui District Council.

Cr McPherson has served one term (three years) and was the first to deliver her valedictory speech to her fellow councillors, Mayor Marie Black and present Council officers.

The Amberley resident described herself as one who has become attached to the dynamic district, which has “massive potential.”

She thanked her support network which has included councillors, Council staff and the residents of Hurunui.

“Ultimately, it’s been a privilege and a pleasure to speak for the residents of the District.”

Cr McPherson will be swapping one theme of reading material for another, as she launches into the third year of her law degree next year, which she began 17 years ago.

Cr Ross Barnes has completed two terms (six years), driving from his home at Mt Lyford to chambers in Amberley countless times.

He thanked the great team of councillors he has worked with and expressed his admiration for those standing again.

“And I would like to thank our Mayor, she has guided us with sensitivity and wisdom.”

Cr Barnes also took the opportunity to thank Council staff for their loyalty and for “keeping the machine humming along.”

Waikari resident Cr Karen Armstrong is resigning after one full term and one part term (four and a half years), and felt proud of the work the councillors have delivered.

“The diversity of Council work has been hard for me to get my head around at times, it has been a constant learning curve.”

But it is a learning curve she has thoroughly enjoyed, admitting with councillors’ own strengths and interests, they have been able to contribute as a team and serve their community.

Cr Armstrong is retiring but will continue her service as a Justice of the Peace.

“It has been a privilege to serve our constituents.”

Mayor Marie Black added some final words, requesting a moment to pause and reflect on what they have achieved together as a Council over the past three years.

“You’ve adapted, persevered, and marked milestones that will have a lasting impact on our District.”

She said the last three years provides momentum and confidence for the Council as they move forward.

“We wish you all the best.”
