A Word from the Mayor
As we enter a new triennium, I want to sincerely thank the people of our district for the trust you have placed in me, it is an incredible honour to continue as Mayor, I feel both humbled and energised by the responsibility that comes with this role.
Our community thrives when people care enough to be involved, and I wish to publicly thank all elected members who have made a significant contribution over the past 3 years, they have gone above and beyond to represent their communities.
Thank you to the candidates who allowed their names to be put forward to enable the voting public the choice and of course to the 39% of eligible voters who took the time to exercise your democratic right, last but not least I have very much appreciated the many messages of support and encouragement.
It is exciting to work with the new team of councillors, community board, community committees, iwi partners, local organisations and residents to build a district that is inclusive, resilient and future focused. My goal is to ensure that every voice has a place at the table, this is our community our future and together we can continue to make Hurunui something we are all proud of.
In the past week we have celebrated as a district that the proposed police restructure was not to be delivered, and the status quo would remain. I commend the police hierarchy in hearing our concerns and having the courage to shelve the proposal in the interests of community safety. As a district we understand and appreciate the importance of locally based officers, given their wealth of knowledge and experience as community leaders particularly when they reside and are embedded in our local communities.
At the end of October there’s no better time to explore our beautiful district, to wander through the stunning gardens, meeting the passionate growers and enjoying the vibrant colours of the season. I invite you to explore the Hurunui Garden Festival and the Celebrate Cheviot Festival. The Amberley A @ P show is the place to experience the heart of rural life with the traditional show events, with entertainment for the whole family, and last but not least the Hanmer Springs Fete where you can indulge in boutique shopping, within the backdrop of the splendid grounds of the historic Queen Mary Hospital in Hanmer Springs.
So, whether you’re a local or visiting, these events show case the very best of what makes Hurunui such a special place to live, work and visit.
You can come for the day or stay for the weekend to enjoy the warm welcome that awaits in our district.
