Rural community unites for post-wind event

Representatives from across rural-Canterbury gathered in Culverden last Friday, to talk to local people about the recent adverse weather events, seek guidance on recovery and relax with a bite to eat.

The “Here for Hurunui” community connection event was organised by representatives of Hurunui District Council, Rural Support Trust, Federated Farmers and Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). These organisations have recognised the huge amount of work that Hurunui residents have had to undertake, as they step through the recovery process, alongside support services and agencies.

The community event was also designed with a view to answer the huge array of questions that come up after adverse weather, like “Is there any grace on tax payments?”, “Who can I contract to cut down my damaged trees?”, or “How do I keep my animals safe and healthy if we lose power?”.

One of the groups at the event who’ve made a big difference during the recovery is Taskforce Kiwi. An organisation of over 800 volunteers from across New Zealand, who in conjunction with Rural Support Trust, have been on-farm, helping farmers and Hurunui residents back on their feet.

Tony Takurua, Rotation Commander from the organisation says “It’s rewarding to come in and help communities when they need it. Rural people don’t usually like to accept help, so just talking to them about where each other are from, usually helps break the ice. The barriers come down then and they know we’re here to help.

Bruce Hoban from Rural Support Trust says it’s been busy on the ground since the weather hit. “I’ve been collecting information, that I can pass on to the trust, so we can plan better for the future. Being at the BBQ has given these folk a chance to relax. They all know what each other has been through, and being at this event they can chat to others, who have the same issues at home.”

Hurunui District Mayor, Marie Black took the opportunity to thank some of the key services that helped people bounce back as swiftly as possible. She acknowledged the first step was the work of MainPower staff, who worked in sub optimal conditions to regain power connections. “It’s wonderful to be able to acknowledge their contribution.”

In addition to the services and agencies on-site, a free BBQ helped create a fun and relaxed atmosphere for attendees.
