The Beaches Welcome You

As we approach the summer with the urge to go to the beach and appreciate the wonderful coastline – I would also ask you to consider the impact of this natural resource.

The Pegasus Bay By-law controls activities to the Northern Pegasus Bay Beaches from the southern boundary of the Hurunui District north to the Amberley rocks.

A by-law was first developed in 2010 and was last reviewed in 2015, and we are currently undergoing the ten reviews as required under the Local Government Act.

The main purpose of the by-law is to control activities and the use of land on the foreshore, beaches and adjacent areas of Northern Pegasus Bay to manage recreational uses including camping and the use of horse and vehicles for the benefit and enjoyment of all users and to minimise environmental impacts arising from these activities.

So, we want to find out from you – How you use the beach? What you enjoy and value most about the beaches? Or whether you have experienced any issues when visiting the beaches??

Over the Summer period until February 2026 please fill the quick survey that can be found on the Hurunui District Council website just search “Do you like our beaches?” if you can provide some feedback that would be valuable.

As 2025 draws to a close, I want to take a moment to thank everyone across our district for the care, commitment and community spirit you have shown.

Christmas and the holiday season are a time to reflect, reconnect and appreciate the people and places that make our district such a special place to live. Whether you are celebrating Christmas, enjoying the summer break, or observing family traditions at this time, I wish you a season filled with warmth, rest and connection.

I want to acknowledge our volunteers, community groups, emergency services, health and wellbeing workers and council staff all who quietly give their time and energy to support others. Your efforts strengthen our communities every day and they do not go unnoticed.

As we head into the Christmas and holiday season, I want to extend my warmest wishes to everyone across our district and to take a moment to highlight the importance of staying safe over the summer break.
