Facing their futures

Earlier this month a bunch of Hurunui’s young people visited Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre for four days of development, before embarking on their 2026 leadership roles.

The Hurunui Youth Council members and Hurunui Youth Programme leaders traversed rough terrain, took on challenges, navigated with compasses, group problem-solved, braved the high ropes course, and endured an unforgettable overnight campout in torrential rain.

Kim Spencer, Youth Development Officer, said one of the most impactful moments came during a 45-minute solo time in the bush to reflect, reset and look ahead, without the distraction of devices.

“Through their courage and confidence, these young people have shown us that the leaders of tomorrow are already here,” she said.

This camp was funded by The Rata Foundation and Hurunui Youth Council.

"Attending a HYC camp for the first time was truly a memorable experience, from the activities to the people. This camp taught me it’s okay to be uncomfortable and ways to overcome challenges in ways I would've never considered. Each activity was filled with fun and an amazing amount of support. In all honesty, the thought of attending a camp for 4 days with everything being unknown was quite nerve-wracking and the idea of not going was appealing. However, not once was I afraid to the point of not participating and am truly grateful to have gone. Overall, the trust and learning I will take with me from this camp with help me grow in the future and I couldn't have asked for a better time."

"When I first heard about going on a three-night camp with people that I didn’t really know I was unsure about going but I decided to go regardless of what my comfort zone was saying and I’m glad that I did. I met new people and I built connections with a lot of people I was pushed outside my comfort zone a lot as well. which was going up and facing my fear of heights and dealing with the cold and likewise I will not forget Perry the possum for a long while."

Meeting new people is not really new to me but the camp really proved why trust and being bold to each other can strengthen bonds between our fellow mates. “The whole team that was at camp, were all very supportive of each other, and just an all round amazing team. This is the kind of thing I really need in my life - a supportive, amazing group of people who will work well together as our Youth Council. Another leadership camp done and dusted! I rate it very highly. And the staff there were amazing too! Can’t forget them, and of course the rest of the Youth Team who were present. Bring on 2026!”
