Be easy to find
Pinpointing a location at a new rural dwelling or business in the Hurunui District is now seamless.
Rural Address Property Identification (RAPID) number plates are now issued as part of the building consent process for all new rural dwellings and businesses in the Hurunui District.
Hurunui District Council’s RAPID Numbering and Vehicle Crossing Officer Liz Atkins said RAPID number plates are essential for emergency services, and anyone wanting to locate a rural address, especially when it’s dark or in poor visibility.
“Any rural dwelling, new or old, really does need to have a RAPID number plate,” she said.
Until recently, the acquisition of a RAPID number plate had not been part of the building consent process. Atkins said that since Council launched its awareness campaign in 2023, uptake has steadily increased across the district.
“Due to changes to the building consent process, we’re ensuring new properties are also covered as well as existing dwellings.”
Since 2025 more than 1500 plates have been purchased, in addition to those issued since the campaign began in 2023.
Atkins said properties with multiple dwellings that do not have a RAPID number plate, or that lack clear on-farm directional signage can create real challenges for emergency services, contractors or visitors.
“For older properties, we’re continuing to focus on a non-regulatory approach, education and awareness, while encouraging ongoing voluntary uptake of RAPID number plates.”
Councillor Chris Scarlet, who is also a volunteer fire fighter for Waiau and Mt Lyford brigades, said RAPID number plates have proven to be invaluable in identifying properties quickly and clearly in emergency situations over the years.
Mayor Marie Black said RAPID number plates may seem like a small detail, but they can make a lifesaving difference.
“I urge rural people to support the purchase, it can be the simplest ways to improve safety for our rural communities.”
