Appointment of Kaikōura Hurunui Water Services directors

At their meetings on 10 and 11 March, the Kaikōura and Hurunui District Councils jointly appointed Lee Babe, Ross Pickworth and Karl Smith to the board of the new council-controlled water organisation, Kaikōura Hurunui Water Services Ltd. All three are current or past members of the Institute of Directors with many years of governance experience.
Lee Babe is currently an independent director for Network Tasman Ltd (Electricity Distribution), and a former Chief Executive of Nelmac (a council-controlled trading organisation providing services to Council, including Three Waters services). Lee’s other current governance positions include Parallaxx Ltd (Risk Management Design and Training) and AgFirst Consultants Nelson Ltd. He is also a founding and continuing member of the NZ Business Leaders’ Health & Safety Forum.
Ross Pickworth has a background in engineering (a past Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand) and is currently a director of seven commercial businesses, including Network Tasman and two council-controlled organisations, including Westroads Ltd (Civil Contracting) and Ashburton Contracting Ltd. Ross has previously been the General Manager – Infrastructure for listed company Steel & Tube Holdings Ltd.
Alongside his governance expertise, Karl Smith brings to the role many years’ experience in finance as a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand. His current directorships include EA Networks Ltd (Electricity Lines Distribution and Fibre Cable Supplier), A.G. Foley Ltd (Trade-Related Services) and Contego Systems Ltd (Fire Protection). Karl has previously been the Chief Executive Officer of Gough Group.
The two councils have also commenced recruitment of a further two board members – one to be appointed by the Hurunui District Council and one by the Kaikōura District Council.
