Next steps for Amberley’s Village Green

The arrival of autumn marks planting season at The Village Green in Amberley’s Eastern Reserve.
The first stage of planting will see trees dotted around some of the perimeter of the Reserve, which former South Ward Community Committee Chair Jo Hassall said will be a great addition to the area.
The Village Green has been enjoyed this summer with its cricket ground, and Hassall said as the trees grow they will give people a great place to sit under to enjoy the matches.
Funding for the trees and shrubs has been received from Amberley District Residents’ Association and The Hurunui 3E Trust.
Hassall said the previous South Ward Committee set up a couple of working groups for the playground and the plantings. She added the playground working group put in a huge amount of time and thought into the design.
“We are very excited to be getting to the installation stage. The Village Green is going to be a fabulous space for all of the South Ward residents.”
Hurunui District Council’s Project Manager Paul Thornton said the addition of the playground and the aesthetics of the plants will complement this great community public place, with irrigation sourced from a bore which has no impact on our town supply.
The new playground is being paid for through the Development Contribution Fund which is dedicated to meet growth demands of Hurunui District.
The playground will feature a wheelchair-friendly seesaw and carousel, swing sets, a climbing tower, interactive play panels, a slide, climbing and balance equipment and monkey bars.
Mayor Marie Black is delighted to see the culmination of the playground equipment coming to the Village Green, which she sees as a real community anchor.
“This is reflective of the long-held vision to create a space that supports play, family gatherings and wellbeing across the ages.”
Council’s Chief Operations Officer Dan Harris complimented the former South Ward Community Committee for the hard work involved in getting this project started, and those who have been involved with carrying on the vision.
“This is a positive step for everyone in the growing South Ward and the wider district. It’s great to have a facility that can be used all year-round, and support local cricket during the summer months,” said Harris.
