Keep at it and you’ll get there

It’s a great feeling having your restricted driver licence in your hand, it makes getting a job so much easier.

Dion Jerebine took to the wheel earlier this week and did just that.

The 19 year-old from Amberley has been part of Hurunui District Council’s Driver Mentor Programme for a year, getting weekly lessons and making his way closer to the end goal.

“I can now look at getting a car, and all the other things that go with having a restricted licence,” said Dion.

Earlier this year he completed an Introductory Engineering course in Christchurch, which was manageable because he lived in town with extended family.

Through Council’s Mayors Taskforce For Jobs programme, Dion has also been involved in voluntary work at local foodbanks and Hurunui Memorial Library in Amberley.

“It’s all been very interesting,” said Dion, reflecting on skills he has learned.

He’s not sure exactly what area of work he wants to get involved in, but knows that having his own transport will make the process a lot easier.

Dion was grateful for the Driver Mentor Programme, the partnership with his mentor Mulle Arndt was really positive and it never felt stressful learning to drive.

“Just keep working at it, you’ll get there,” was Dion’s advice to anyone thinking about joining the Driver Mentor Programme.
