Hurunui District Council celebrated a diverse cross-section of volunteers, businesses and young leaders at the Community Service Awards in July. Mark and Deb Wilson are just two of the 2026 recipients from Hurunui's South Ward, demonstrating the very best of what community service looks like.
Mark and Deb's contribution cannot be measured by a single project, event, or achievement. It's found in the countless acts of kindness, generosity and practical support they've offered over many years, without fanfare or expectation of recognition. Yet the impact of their service has touched the lives of many throughout Hurunui.
Through their longstanding involvement in local food bank initiatives, they've provided not only practical assistance to individuals and families experiencing hardship, but also dignity, hope and reassurance.
Their commitment to building connections can be seen in the small library book exchange they established on Markham Street in Amberley, and the establishment and ongoing leadership of the Amberley Community Monthly Meal which provides companionship, conversation, friendship and a genuine sense of belonging for those who attend.
This commitment extends equally to the younger generation through their leadership of Hurunui youth attending the annual Easter Camp at Spencer Park, where they've helped to create opportunities for young people to develop confidence, build friendships, strengthen their character and experience positive mentoring.
Mark and Deb have also made a significant contribution to the faith community in Amberley having devoted countless hours to organising and catering for community events, creating welcoming spaces where people can gather, support one another and build lasting relationships. On many occasions they've personally contributed financially to ensure community initiatives could continue and remain accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstance.
Quite simply, Mark and Deb are good, hardworking people whose actions have always spoken louder than words and their outstanding contributions have enriched Amberley in ways that will continue to be felt for many years to come.
