The true spirit of community service
Volunteers, businesses and young leaders were all celebrated at the Hurunui District Council Community Service Awards in July. Pam Wilson is one of the amazing recipients from the 2026 awards.
Pam has quietly dedicated much of her life to serving the Waiau community through a variety of roles, including many volunteer positions. This has meant countless hours spent working behind the scenes, without seeking recognition.
For almost 30 years, Pam has been a committed member of the Waiau Volunteer Fire Brigade holding many positions. For 14 years Pam has also volunteered with Hato Hone St John devoting countless hours responding to medical emergencies throughout the Amuri district. Pam's commitment to helping others has also extended to Civil Defence especially following the devastating earthquakes in 2011 and 2016.
Away from emergency services, Pam has spent decades quietly strengthening the Waiau community through her compassion, reliability and unwavering willingness to help wherever she is needed. Whether responding to emergencies, caring for neighbours, supporting schools and families, maintaining community facilities, producing and delivering the community newsletter or simply lending a helping hand, she has consistently put others before herself.
Pam exemplifies the very spirit of community service. Her lifelong commitment, humility and generosity have enriched countless lives and made Waiau a stronger and more caring community.
