Celebrating Community Service in Hawarden
The 2026 Community Service Awards was a fantastic event, celebrating the best the district has to offer. Local business, youth leadership, heritage and the environment were all recognised alongside some amazing individuals like Sue and Jim Trumper.
For decades, Jim and Sue have quietly and generously devoted themselves to the Hawarden community, giving not for recognition, but because they genuinely care about the people around them.
Sue's dedication to the Hawarden Swimming Club has seen countless children learn the life skill of swimming while gaining confidence, developing friendships and experiencing the rewards of teamwork and competition.
Sue can often be seen in the Junior end of the local school as a Teacher Aide, mending Library books or helping with swimming lessons in the summer.
She's also been the backbone of the Hawarden Netball Club, never holding a position on the committee, but doing the hard work in the background. In appreciation of this, Sue was granted Life Membership of the club and can still be seen at the courts most weekends supporting all involved.
Jim and Sue have always been the people who step forward when something needs to be done. Whether supporting a community event, lending a hand behind the scenes, or encouraging someone through a difficult time, they have consistently given the most valuable gift anyone can offer - their time.
Jim's involvement with the Parish Farm and willingness to mentor and support young farmers has had a lasting impact. His practical guidance, encouragement and belief in others has helped many young people establish themselves, and even today he continues to help the next generation find their feet and build successful futures.
Together they have contributed to the Hawarden School, the Netball Club, Hawarden A&P Association, Hawarden Tennis Club, the Men's Shed, the Parish Farm and other organisations. Their service has never been about personal recognition but about strengthening the community and helping others succeed.
Jim's Honorary Life Membership of the Hawarden A&P Association reflects the esteem in which he is held, but it represents only one part of a lifetime of service shared with Sue.
Their contribution to Hawarden has been extraordinary, and it is with great respect and gratitude that we recognise Jim and Sue Trumper for their outstanding service to our community.
