Community supporting community
A massive thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the sunshine at Mt Lyford on Sunday, a lovely day of connection and stories from folk across Hurunui and Kaikoura who experienced first-hand the effects of the significant rain event in July.
A big thanks to Rodin Cars for the use of Mt Lyford Lodge and providing event supplies, and Harris Meats for providing the sausages.
Wonderful refreshments were in the hands of the duo Honky Tonka coffee cart, thank you Ed from Mainpower and the team of local firefighters and Civil Defence team for coming along, and for the ongoing community work.
From Kaikōura District Council, Hurunui District Council, and Rural Support Trust – thank you.
Hurunui’s Mayor Marie Black said Sunday was about taking a breath, reconnection with one another and having an opportunity to recharge.
She reminded those who gathered that it’s important to check in with one another, share experiences and remember things don’t have to be done alone.
“That is one of the great strengths of rural communities, people look out for each other, step forward when needed and find ways to keep going, even when the circumstances seem difficult.”
Mayor Black expressed a big thank you to Federated Farmers, Rural Support Trust and the recovery teams from Kaikoura and Hurunui, and acknowledged the quiet acts of kindness that make the difference – a phone call, a helping hand, checking in on the neighbour or simply taking the time to listen.
“Recovery can take time, the needs vary from person to person, and they don’t disappear once the immediate emergency has passed… Ten years ago we learnt about our resilience… it’s about knowing we can rely on each other when it matters most.”
