Outstanding youth leadership recognised

The Hurunui District Council Community Service Awards in July 2026, celebrated the depth and breadth of service across the district.

Ruby Beckdahl has shown outstanding leadership, initiative and service throughout her four years with the Rangiora High School LEOs. LEOs are the youth and young adult members of Lions Club International.

Ruby played a key role in transforming the club from advisor‑led to youth‑led, driving growth, structure and engagement. Her leadership revitalised membership—first adding 10 new members, and later after completing respective courses, expanded the club to 32 members.

As vice‑president and now president, Ruby consistently embodies the values of LEOs; organising major environmental projects, mentoring emerging leaders, introducing structured planning tools and strengthening community partnerships.

Lions also provided Ruby with a grant to be a trainee on the Spirit of Adventure in 2025. In 2026 she has returned to volunteer as crew!

Alongside her formal achievements, Ruby’s character sets her apart. She is genuinely thoughtful and considerate, always placing others first. Naturally organised and proactive, she ensures everything runs smoothly and steps in wherever she is needed.

Ruby currently works at the Amberley Pool, where she began as a lifeguard in October 2023. She also qualified as a swim instructor in February 2024.

Ruby is an inspiring young woman whose dedication and kindness exemplifies leadership and is profoundly deserving of recognition.
