The Hurunui District Council Community Service Awards are a brilliant way to celebrate the depth and breadth of service across the district. The 2026 awards were no different.
Since returning to Scargill 30 years ago to take over the family farm Jock Foster has given outstanding service to his community.
Jock coached junior rugby at Glenmark Rugby Club for five years, and then served as President of the club, continuing to strengthen an organisation playing a vital role in bringing the community together. He has served two terms on the Greta Valley School Board of Trustees, including time as Chairperson.
Jock was the inaugural Chair of the Glenmark Ward Committee, now known as the Glenmark Community Committee, serving three terms.
Jock was president of the Scargill Squash Club for 4 years leading a major renovation project to upgrade the club's facilities, ensuring they remain a valuable community asset. He was also a marshal at the Class 4 event at the Omihi Dog Trials and still turns out every year to help with slipping duties.
Over the years Jock has generously opened his farm to host numerous trail rides raising significant funds for the local school and sports clubs.
Jock has also generously shared his knowledge, experience and time with countless young people beginning their journey in agriculture providing practical experience and mentoring for students from Lincoln University, participants in Beef + Lamb programmes, school Gateway programmes and more recently, students in the Growing Future Farmers programme.
A patient mentor and gifted teacher, Jock takes the time to explain, demonstrate and encourage. He challenges young people to do their best while creating an environment where they feel supported, respected and capable of succeeding
Jock exemplifies the very best of community service. The countless hours he has freely given, the lives he has touched, and the example he continues to set make him an outstanding recipient of this award.
