Becoming a Mentor
The Hurunui Community Driver Mentor Programme (HCDMP) matches up learner drivers with full licenced volunteer mentors to coach and learn safe driving practices to pass the restricted driving test.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR MENTORS THAT
- Hold a full NZ Drivers Licence
- Can commit to 1-2 hours of driver mentoring per week
- Have a passion for driving or inspiring others
ALL MENTORS RECIEVE
- Mentor training from a professional driving school
- Ongoing support from the programme coordinator and driving school
- Use of our programme vehicles to support your Mentees practice
Programme Steps
- Apply for the programme. Complete an entrance interview with the programme coordinator. This will include completing programme documentation and Police and drivers licence background checks.
- The programme coordinator matches you with a mentee (learner driver) from the programme that has been vetted for entry and is available for driving practice at the same time as you.
- Your first lesson with your mentee will be with a qualified driving instructor from Proactive Drive Driving School with you observing.
- Book the programme car at a regular time slot that suits you and your mentee and work on through the programme handbook and the advice given to your mentee from the driving instructor.
- The mentee has a second assessment by a qualified Proactive driving instructor with you observing.
- Continue weekly lessons with your mentee working on feedback from the second assessment.
- When you think your mentee is ready to sit their licence test, they have a third assessment or mock test with a qualified Proactive driving instructor with you observing.
- Continue lessons with your mentee until their restricted licence test date.
- Take your mentee to their restricted licence test in the programme car.
- Celebrate your mentee successfully gaining their licence and the gift you have supported them to achieve.
