The Hurunui Road Safety Programme works in partnership with New Zealand Police, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, and local authorities across Canterbury to improve road safety throughout the district. Together, we aim to promote safe road user behaviour and reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on Hurunui roads and across the wider Canterbury region.
The programme delivers a range of education, engagement, and community-based initiatives that target identified road safety issues within the Hurunui District. These activities are designed to encourage safer choices, behaviours and improve the skill level of road users.
We currently support initiatives in the following areas:
The Hurunui Road Safety Programme is overseen by the Hurunui Road Safety Coordinating Committee, which meets quarterly to discuss local road safety issues, share information, and collaborate on initiatives that improve safety outcomes across the district. The Committee brings together representatives from local government, road safety agencies, emergency services, and community organisations to help identify priorities and develop effective solutions for our communities.
