Amberley Township Household Glass Recycling

How do I obtain a glass recycling box?

A voucher to collect a glass recycling box and details on where and when boxes can be picked up was posted to Amberley township householders around Friday 12 June.

If living in a rented property, the voucher will be mailed to the property, but addressed to the owner, so tenants will need to contact the owner or property manager and bring photo id and proof of their current address to collect the box.

What day will household glass be collected?

Household glass bottles and jars will be collected on a Tuesday, at the same time as Hurunui Council rubbish and recycling bags.

The glass recycling box should be left at the kerbside by 8am for collection by a single truck with separate compartments for rubbish and recycling and a trailer for glass.

What types of glass can go in the recycling box?

Clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars, providing they are clean, unbroken, with lids removed are accepted. Labels can be left on, as these melt off in the recycling process.

What should I do with the lids?

Aluminium wine bottle lids can be dropped off to any transfer station or library for Amberley Lions who collect them on behalf of Christchurch Kidney Society. All other lids belong in the rubbish.

What if I have excess glass bottles or jars?

Do not load bottles and jars higher than the box rim. Glass in cardboard and non-Hurunui Council issued boxes will be stickered and left.

Excess glass can be dropped off at any transfer station during opening hours.

What cannot be put in the glass recycling box?

The following are not accepted, any boxes containing these types of glass will not be collected.

• Window glass or mirrors.
• Perfume bottles, medicine or vape bottles.
• Windscreen glass - can be recycled via Amberley transfer station.
• Pyrex or ovenware.
• Drinking glasses.
• Light bulbs – can be recycled via Amberley transfer station.

Is it possible to have a second glass recycling box?

No - one box per household is allocated and rated for. Excess glass can be recycled via Amberley transfer station.

What happens to the glass collected?

All glass is off loaded at Amberley transfer station and combined with transfer station glass in open top hook bins.

These bins are collected by a contractor returning from Kate Valley and transported to Christchurch to one of two processers to be made into cullet for new bottles or crushed for use in roading.
