Hurunui Youth Council
The Hurunui Youth Council (HYC) is made up of 12 young people aged 14½–24 years who are passionate about making a difference in their community. HYC provides a platform for young people to have their voices heard on issues that matter to them and to help shape decisions that affect rangatahi across the Hurunui District.
Being part of HYC is a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded young people, build leadership skills, gain confidence, and contribute to the future of the district.
Members meet regularly to discuss local issues, learn about local government, develop new skills, and provide a youth perspective on Hurunui District Council projects, policies, and decisions.
HYC members also have opportunities to connect with other youth councils across Waitaha/Canterbury, including Waimakariri, Selwyn, Christchurch, Kāikōura, and Environment Canterbury (ECAN). These connections provide opportunities for leadership development, joint training, regional and national events, submissions, and collaboration on issues affecting young people.
The Youth Council meets monthly on a Monday, alternating between formal meetings held in the Hurunui District Council Chambers in Amberley and workshops. Throughout the year, members also take part in community projects, leadership opportunities, training, and social events.
